One of the most common questions I receive from clients is if he is long term. Understandably clients don’t want to waste their time on someone who is not aligned with their own relationship goals and wants.
Here is some common indicators that he is NOT a long term option:
- If you can’t communicate with him without being afraid that he will see that as a bad thing. In marriage you will need to communicate about all issues; health, finances, where each person is going for safety reasons, house repairs, large purchases, and emotional support. If you can’t talk both ways long term just won’t happen.
- If he never initiates and you always initiate (or vice versa). A husband should want to talk to you and should be good at affirming to you that he is dedicated to you. Insecurities are not good for long term and will result in discord, resentment, fighting, and hurt feelings.
- If he disrespects you consistently when you talk and never apologizes. You will fight, he may slip up, but he should know how to apologize to repair and help you two move on. This is a basic and important long term relationship skill. If he can’t apologize it won’t work long term.
- He doesn’t show that he cares about your feelings. If he lets things go every time, doesn’t pick up on your unhappiness and in turn do something about it, it won’t last.
- He doesn’t share or give you anything. It’s one thing to keep finances separate, but it is another to be completely selfish. He should offer you something, make you something, or gift something. If he is unwilling to share something like part of his meal, flowers he picked from the garden, or his music with you he is selfish and only in this for him. In fact, it may be an indication he is just not that into you. Next!
