Top 3 beliefs about Weight Loss that are False

I’ve lost 130 pounds in my life. I see the same commercials you do, even tried some of the plans that sell you on the dreams of floating through life eating what you want, magically being able to use moderation and eat that chocolate cake (there is a reason why you can’t), and never being hungry only to find when you wake up in the morning you are 50 pounds thinner!

If you believe that, I have a bridge in Brooklyn I want to sell you. No really, it’s in the back, let me show you.

To cut to the chase, these plans are selling you on dreams. They are marketing ploys. They have listened to the common complaints and questions and are trying to sell you their product. Tried some of them, they don’t work. Here is what did work that helped me lose 130 pounds. Here is what my top 3 untruths that diet plans try to sell people.

1. That you’ll never be hungry. “Just eat more fat, don’t be hungry, and you’ll lose fat!” False. In every plan that I’ve used I was hungry at some point. Increasing fat never worked for me yet and may be why keto didn’t (although I do use Keto or low glycemic recipes to help me with my macros). You’ll be hungry, not all the time, but on occasion. Being hungry is a way for your body to signal to you it is using its fat reserves to function and to go find more. You want the body to use that fat instead of eating more food. You learn to be ok with with feeling a little hungry, you adapt and it no longer bothers you. You redirect your attention to something else. To be able to lose weight and never be hungry is a marketing ploy. Don’t expect to glide through weight loss without hunger and you’ll get past hurdles in your journey.

2. You don’t have to count calories. False. None of the plans worked when I didn’t count them. The plans that worked, I always counted them. If you’ve memorized them so you don’t have to count them and consistently eat the same things, that works. That works because you’ve counted them at some point and you know you are creating a caloric deficit. Some skinny girls can count the calories in their mind. Studies have shown that overweight people have the ability to forget what they’ve eaten in a day or be completely oblivious to how much they’ve eaten.(1) That is how weight gain starts, so a habit needs to be changed. You need to be more aware of what is going in your mouth.

3. Once I lose the weight I don’t have to diet again. If I do have to diet again, I’ve failed. False. Even skinny girls diet or detox. My Dad has always maintained his weight but I will hear from him that he “feels it” when he’s gained 2 or more pounds and will cut down on some foods for a short period of time. What I have found is they catch the weight gain within 2 to 5 pounds and nip it in the butt good before it is out of control. Overweight people let it slide for a lot longer or feel like a failure if they aren’t able to maintain magically for all time. Expect you’ll have to watch it after you lose all the weight and make adjustments. Be more in tune with you and your body, continue to get on the scale after you lose it, continue to measure and be mindful of the calories. Its how you lose it, its how you keep it off.

You think I gave you all you need to know? Kind of. I did clear the clutter of false advertising. You could take that and run with it and be successful, in theory.

However you also may run into psychological problems such as binge eating, hopelessness and spiritual problems such as being ungrounded, energies and entities that set you up to fail.

Been there and done much of that, even better I have access to spirit guides that can help you through whatever unique or similar situation you are going through. I have accountability sessions as well as informational sessions, one on one with your guides. I haven’t met a nutritionist that can do all of that yet.

How do you Lose Weight?

I lost 130 lbs, and I’m going to keep the first part of this very simple, as people often get confused with all the advertising. If you want more detailed information I have a weight loss packet along with accountability sessions and other informational sessions on my website. I am now an IAOTH CPD certified Nutritional Therapist. Click on the link to go to my packet.

These are the three ways I’ve been able to lose fat and reshape my figure.

  1. Watch my calories and keep them to the recommended limit using an app such as Lose it. In this method I did not pay attention to macros in other words I did not try to stay low carb. This is probably one of the slowest methods that I’ve gone through but it still works, creating a caloric deficit and thereby the body uses your stored fat. Its also the simplest method. Use a progressive calorie daily total adjustment for plateaus.
  2. Going super low carb, less than 50g a day, high protein and a lot of spinach, and low fat too (not “Keto”). Spinach is it good appetite suppressant and diuretic meaning helps you lose water weight. I did not exercise in this plan. This is the fastest method I have used, but not for the faint of heart. Expect moodiness and use supplements such as MCT oil and others to help with moods and energy swings.
  3. Watching my calories as well as exercising. I would exercise in the morning before I had eaten anything, taking my BCAAs and pre-workout supplement, I would do 30 minutes of cardio and 30 minutes of weight training. I felt awesome after my workouts, I could feel my body changing quickly and I had way more energy and positive attitude. Other than food, exercise can uplift your mood as well and it’s probably one of the healthier ways of doing that. I would still watch macros, about 50g of whole wheat, which is a 1/2 cup. Best way to have this was my flat bread, recipe here. No extreme mood swings, if anything I was happier. Use a progressive calorie daily total adjustment for plateaus.

To be honest keto never worked for me longer than a week. I’ve tried it twice now, I didn’t have long-lasting results, a lot of mood swings. Maybe it was just my body type, I don’t know because I’ve seen other people have success or say that they do. What I found is keto give you a false sense that in order lose weight you will never be hungry because you just load up on fats, so you have the expectation going into it that you’re not going to be hungry. I think that’s false. I don’t think I ever lost weight on any plan that did not make me hungry at some point. I think you may be hungry, because that’s your body singling to you “hey I’m using up your fat preserves, I don’t like this I wish to survive, eat more food!” So going in with an expectation of never being hungry I think is not good, and loading up on more fats has not done positive things for me. I did keto while watching my calories, still didn’t get the results I was looking for. The other 3 above were more effective. When I watched carbs I was also low fat.

Keto may not be the right fit for you. Low carb, yes that helped me, but with low fat as well. I was hungry at some point in all of these plans, got used to it, and liked the slimmer figure as a result. I would say if you really want to lose weight, expect to get hungry every once and a while. Work on your fear of being hungry. Hunger is not something to cure, you have plenty of food, you can eat “later”. You’ll be ok with a little hunger.

I do not recommend drinking alcohol on these plans either, it can affect your pancreas, which regulates insulin and glycogen, and may slow down your progress. Have a doctor do a full blood panel with Lipase to see if you have organ issues that may be negatively affecting your weight loss. If your Lipase is high you may have a pancreas issue and need to be on low fat and no alcohol to continue to lose weight.

Now what I do is use some of those keto recipes to supplement sometimes like for dessert, so I can feel like I’m having a dessert without spiking my sugar, thereby releasing insulin, which causes the body to store fat. Just count those calories, and macros if you are using that route.

Also, ditch the idea that you can lose weight without counting calories. Won’t work. Just like losing weight without getting hungry every once and a while. Won’t work. Your body wants to keep you alive, it will signal to you to eat and even store fat sometimes. So going off of only your feelings on how much to eat may not cut it. Never worked for me. That’s just commercials trying to sell you the dream.

You think I gave you all you need to know?  Kind of.  I did clear the clutter of false advertising.  You could take that and run with it and be successful, in theory.

However you also may run into psychological problems such as emotional eating, binge eating, hopelessness and other spiritual problems such as being ungrounded, energies and entities that set you up to fail.

There is way more to tell you but that is the advice of the day. My packet gives the other components such as psycholoigcal tricks and spiritual tips to help you succeed long term. Keto may not work for many of you because of the mood swings, the expectation that you will never be hungry which is not logical, and having too much fat in a diet may not be the best way to lose fat.

I have other weight loss and fitness advice in my blog, feel free to go through my blogs which are ad-free. Also I have a weight loss packet along with 3 months of sessions for questions and support.

What if I have failed every weight loss plan I’ve been on?

By Andrea Knight, mediumandreaknight.com

Listening to my weight loss clients and listening to their questions, I thought I might address this one first. Other blogs to come on my weight loss plan so stay tuned to this blog and click the “follow” button.

First, I watch the same commercials that talk about weight loss that you do. Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Slim Fast and the like. I’ve even spoken to my own physician on their advice concerning weight loss. When I went to my doctor I’d have to say I was very disappointed after the session. She offered very little detailed advice when it came to how someone should go about weight loss other than to create a caloric deficit and maybe watch the quality of the calories you put in. I think it takes a lot more than that. As you well know, and if you’re reading this blog, you’ve probably been through a few plans yourself, there’s a psychological component that is very important. There’s also a spiritual component that I haven’t seen any of these plans with commercials on TV address. Honestly many of the plans that say that they are “holistic” truly aren’t as they are not including the spiritual. That’s what makes my weight loss plan different, I give you solutions to the spiritual as well as give you summaries on the psychological articles and books that I’ve read. Being successful myself with 130 pounds lost, I can walk you through some of the pitfalls and some of the problems you may encounter so that you can be successful. You can find my weight loss plan here.

Second I’m going to refer to some psychological advice that I overheard once. I think it’s a great illustration of what a lot of people go through. They said that if you keep repeating a pattern then you must be benefiting from it in some way. In other words if you continue to choose chocolate cake, you’re probably benefiting from it in some way. Mood, escape, a break from work. In this case let’s say it could be the short-term pleasure and the boost to your mood caused by dopamine and/or serotonin from the sugar. My plan does give you some psychological advice as well as some supplements to help you through things like that. They said in order to break the habit you no longer want, you have to realize what you’ve been benefiting from it in some way and realize that you have to give up whatever that benefit is. Are you ready to get rid of the short-term pleasure in order to achieve the long-term results you would desire?

Next I’m going to tell you something that no one else will. I feel like it’s something that you should consider instead of suffering for the rest of your life over this. Maybe you’re not willing to compromise the short-term pleasure for the long-term benefits. You keep making that choice, maybe that is just it.

Maybe it’s not a thin body alone you are really trying to achieve, maybe it’s a relationship you desire. Relationships are full of hard work, intimacy issues, sickness, not to mention rejection, death, separation and loss. There’s a lot of negatives to relationships that I deal with when doing readings on a day-to-day basis, but there’s a lot of pleasurable effects as well, which I’m sure you are aware of. Subconsciously, you may remember the negative aspects of being in a relationship. That its not all dandy all the time. My parents have been married 55 years and I can’t say that they were 100% happy all the time, relationships are filled with ups and downs. So if you’re trying to lose weight for the reason of having the relationship you desire, there may be some other subconscious beliefs that are holding you back, some fears of being in a relationship or even intimacy fears. So a relationship would be even more work after you’ve lost all that weight. After you’ve lost all that weight, you will have to find other coping mechanisms other than alcohol and food to deal with those additional emotional relationship problems that are now in your life. Sometimes being single can be easier, and we’re fortunate enough these days that we don’t need a partner in order to live, own property, or to put food on the table. You may be choosing to be single. Doesn’t mean that you don’t want the “ideal relationship” in Hallmark movies but subonsciously you may not want all the negatives. So that snickers bar looks far more tasty to you mentally, physically, and spiritually right now than all the work that a relationship would be in the future. You’re making a choice. You’re making the choice of short-term pleasure now versus long-term work and some occasional up and down happiness. That happiness in the relationship may not be continuous and on some level you know that. If you’ve come to this conclusion, and you’ve admitted to yourself that this is truly what you want, good for you. You’re way ahead of so many people struggling and purchasing so many weight loss plans. If you’re willing to give it another try, and think you just need some more spiritual advice along with the psychological and the physical plan, take a look at my weight loss page and we can start the journey together.

Lastly I really want to emphasize the grief cycle here. When we perceive a loss whether that is loss of being able to eat chocolate cake whenever we want, cheese and crackers, or mashed potatoes with gravy, we can go through the grief cycle. A lot of people experience depression when they first start a weight-loss plan along with the detoxification effects that their body is going through. I should also note that if you went through the previous paragraph and you’ve decided, “you know what, I think I’m going to give myself a break and accept that maybe I don’t want to go through what I have to go through the rest of my life to be and stay so thin”, good for you, note that there may be a loss of Hope in some way, which can lead to you going through the grief cycle. If you start to feel depressed after realizing any of this, I asked God in a prayer or meditation to help you get to the end of the grief cycle which they call that stage “acceptance.” This will help you get over the hump a lot quicker and prevent you from falling back into the habits and patterns of depression, sadness, anger, or bargaining.

Now despite the decadence of chocolate cake, I was still able to lose 130 pounds, so it is possible, with some help. Check out my weight-loss packet, along with consultations.
