In multiple psychic readings I have met clients who are staying with a difficult romantic partner even though they can’t get past the issues in the relationship. Some of these couples have been together for years, like 7 or 9 years in some cases. They don’t feel secure enough to get married, but they also don’t split apart, sometimes due to their perception of “sunk costs”.

Sunk costs are when someone puts in time, energy, effort into a relationship that ultimately doesn’t work. Putting in more time in the same relationship for them wouldn’t necessarily result in a better outcome, but due to the effort put in already the client continues to put in more energy because they are afraid if they didn’t it would seem they wasted their time on the previous 7 to 9 years.

While this may be initially understandable, it may also be continuing the pain when the client could cut their losses, heal, and start anew. As I heard one individual say, “you have two hard paths”, to leave, or to stay. “Pick your hard.”
