Have you ever been in a situation where someone asks for your help, and once you do help they either put half the energy they should into it or lose motivation? Then you are left feeling like you could have put your time into something else? Or, you offer to help someone you think is in need but it turns out they weren’t appreciative?
When I approach these kind of situations I will remind myself to “sensei it”. What this refers to is the many kung fu movie plots where the pupil approaches the master and says he wants to learn, but the master keeps refusing, saying they are too old or they don’t teach. The pupil ends up either doing chores for the master or working very hard until the master gives in and teaches them. Essentially the pupil, or one asking for help, has proven that they are motivated and serious about their plea. If they aren’t serious then false pupils will leave pretty early on, saving you time and effort.
When I say “sensei it” to myself it means wait. Wait until they have shown they are really serious and really interested. Have them come to you and demonstrate they will take your effort and time seriously. If not, then they remove themselves without effort on your part, and then you can refocus your efforts on something you want to do.
